Dolichovespula maculata - Emily found this queen bald-faced hornet making a nest near her front door. At this stage, the hornet was working on the finishing touches on her second paper layer of the nest. Inside the center of the protective layers of the nest is a small cluster of cells arranged just like a typical paper wasp nest. The next four photos were taken over the next week or two as the queen continued to expand her nest and tend to the eggs and larvae contained in the cells inside.
Dolichovespula maculata - This photo shows the same nest after the second protective layer was finished being formed.
Dolichovespula maculata - This photo shows the queen forming a third layer on her nest.
Dolichovespula maculata - This photo shows the queen continuing to work on the third layer of her nest.
Dolichovespula maculata - This photo shows the third layer about half-way completed. Shortly after this photo was taken, the nest was removed from the house.
